Slot Receivers – What Does it Take to Be a Slot Receiver?

Slot is a position on the football field that has become a necessity for many teams today. A team isn’t complete without a receiver who can play in the slot, because it gives them the ability to attack all three levels of the defense. The Slot receiver got its name because they line up pre-snap between the last wideout and the tight end or offensive tackle, which is the area of the field known as the “slot.” It’s more than just a spot on the field, though; there is so much more to being a Slot receiver.

In addition to catching passes, Slot receivers also have an important blocking role to fill as well. They have to be able to block for both the running backs and outside wide receivers. They must be able to pick up blitzes from linebackers and secondary players, as well as provide protection on outside run plays. This is why it takes a very special skill set to be a successful Slot receiver.

Another important role of a Slot receiver is acting as a decoy. This means that when the offense is lining up to run a running play, they will often send the Slot receiver in motion before handing him the ball. This will give the player a full head of steam when they receive the ball, allowing them to get to the outside of the field before being hit by the defense’s best tacklers.

Lastly, Slot receivers are very good at returning punts. This is something that is extremely important in today’s game, as punt returns are a huge part of a team’s success. They are also very good at getting open for long receptions, and can be a great threat deep down the field.

Finally, a good Slot receiver must be fast and have excellent hands. This is because they are often asked to catch contested catches or make difficult catches in the air. In addition to these skills, a good Slot receiver must also be very precise in their route running and timing. It’s a very demanding position that requires a lot of practice to master, and it’s why so many special teams units employ Slot receivers.
